Chicago man charged with murder after police officer's death

Police officers know that they are risking their life every time they report for duty. Most are willing to give their life in order to ensure the safety of the people they are sworn to protect. Unfortunately, one Chicago police officer lost his life in an incident that occurred while he was off duty. Recently, a third man has been charged with murder for his involvement in the officer's death.

The officer was killed in 2011. According to reports, the officer was off duty while working at a convenience store. Police claim two men, including the 25-year-old recently charged, with guns. The deceased victim identified himself as a police officer.

Despite knowing the man was a police officer, both men allegedly shot him -- in the abdomen and in the back. The man died as a result of his injuries. The alleged shooters are believed to have taken $700 from the store as well as the officer's gun. In addition to the recent charges filed against one of the alleged gunmen, two other men have been charged -- the other suspected shooter and a man who allegedly waited in the getaway car.

When a case involves the death of a police officer, people understandably demand justice. However, it is important that the public's demand for justice doesn't result in charges being hastily brought against someone who was not involved in the crime. Many people forget that even once charges are brought, the accused is considered innocent until proven otherwise. Prosecutors in Chicago must prove that the man charged with murder is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, a high standard that is occasionally difficult to meet, in order to gain a guilty verdict.
