It is sometimes astonishing how quickly lives can change. A simple action, such as going out for a cup of coffee, can lead to devastating consequences. One man in Chicago was recently shot in the head when he went for coffee. Another man is now charged with attempted murder, in addition to being charged with murder in another shooting that happened just four hours earlier.
In early April, a 31-year-old man allegedly became involved in an argument with the 57-year-old clerk at a convenience store. Reports indicate that the clerk blocked the other man’s path, and he was shot in the chest by the younger man. The clerk died shortly after the shooting.
Approximately four hours later, another man, a 50-year-old father of 10, was shot in the head as he went for a cup of coffee in a different part of town. He is currently in serious condition. Police claim that the man accused of the shootings was tracked down after the alleged getaway car was found near where he lives, although it is not clear if the car is registered to him.
Some reports indicate that the accused man was questioned by Chicago detectives for 12 hours before he was charged with murder. It is unclear what information was obtained during the questioning or if there is additional evidence linking the accused to the shootings other than the location of the suspected getaway car. In order to obtain a conviction, prosecutors must provide enough evidence to prove the man’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, a standard that is meant to be stringent in order to protect against the possibility of a wrongful conviction.
