When people lose a family member or loved one, there is often a demand for an explanation for how and why that loss occurred. Additionally, there is an understandable desire for justice when a person is killed as a result of a crime. However, it is important that the rights of those accused of a crime, including those charged with murder, are preserved to ensure that the lives of even more people aren’t unjustly harmed. Two men in Illinois will likely be working to ensure that their rights are preserved after they were accused of murdering a man.
The murder occurred in Nov. 2013. The 32-year-old victim was apparently a customer at a gas station when he was shot in the head. While it is unclear why the man was shot, police have stated that the incident did not appear to be a robbery.
Police have also stated they were reviewing surveillance footage as part of their investigation and searching for a green sports utility vehicle. Two men, a 36-year-old and a 42-year-old, were indicted recently in connection with the man’s murder. It is unclear at this time what led police to these men or what evidence prosecutors currently have to support the claims against them.
All those facing crimes in this country, including those charged with murder, have certain rights. For example, they have the right to a fair trial. Additionally, they are presumed not guilty unless and until they are found guilty by a criminal court. In order to do so, Illinois prosecutors must prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Failure to meet this high burden of proof must result in a not guilty verdict.
