Many people do not realize the many rights that are afforded to us as inhabitants of this country. Of course, most people are aware of the basic rights of freedom of religion and speech, for example, but they could be unaware of the many rights of people suspected or accused of a crime. As a result, some people who face a criminal accusation, including a DUI charge, may be unaware that their rights have been violated. An Illinois teenager will likely need to ensure that all her rights were observed in the events leading up to her arrest as well as throughout the criminal process.
The incidents that led to her arrest occurred in mid-June. Police claim that the young woman struck a motorcycle but failed to remain at the scene. She was not arrested until after police claim she later ran into the ditch.
Although an up-to-date report on the motorcyclist’s condition is currently unclear, he or she was conscious when transported to the hospital. Police claim that the teenager was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, but it is unclear how this was determined or what her blood alcohol level may have been. She is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
The complexities of the criminal justice system are often difficult for people to fully understand, unless they deal with it on a day-to-day basis. Fortunately, people, such as this Illinois teenager now facing a DUI charge, can seek assistance from those with such experience. By doing so, a person charged with a crime can ensure that he or she is given the rights that he or she deserves.
