Illinois basketball coach facing DUI charge

There are many people who a person encounters throughout the course of his or her life that has a profound influence on them. When the vast majority of people are asked who had a major impact on their life, they frequently respond with the name of a former teacher or coach. Unfortunately, one man who serves as a teacher and a high school basketball coach in Illinois may be remembered for the DUI charge he now faces rather than his contributions to the basketball court and classroom.

The incident leading to his arrest happened in mid-April. The arresting officer claims that he observed the 46-year-old man driving erratically, including driving lower than the speed limit. The man, who has been a teacher for approximately 20 years, reportedly told officers that he had stopped at a bar after he left a basketball game at the school where he coaches.

Police say that the man was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test. It is unclear if a Breathalyzer test was administered or what his actual blood alcohol level was reported to be at the time of his arrest. He has since posted bail and been released from jail.

While virtually no one in Illinois condones drinking and driving, it is unclear if there is more evidence than a field sobriety test and reports that the man was driving slower than the posted speed limit to support the claim that he was driving under the influence. While those who drink and drive in violation of our laws should be held responsible, it is equally important that innocent people are not falsely accused. If there is not enough evidence to prove that the man is guilty of the DUI charge beyond a reasonable doubt, he cannot be found guilty of the charges against him.
