A person can never really know when their last moment might come. It could come during a car accident or as a result of violence by someone else. When someone is intentionally killed at the hands of another, people understandably want justice. However, it is important that the rights of the accused are carefully preserved, including ensuring that prosecutors have charged the actual perpetrator. One man has now been charged with attempted murder and murder after a recent shooting in Chicago.
The incident occurred in Dec. 2013. The victims are two men, ages 25 and 26. Police state that the two men were standing in the vestibule of an apartment building in the early morning hours when a gunman, with a group of people, entered and opened fire.
Both men were shot in the abdomen and taken to area hospitals for treatment. The 26-year-old, unfortunately, died from his injuries. A 35-year-old man from out-of-state has since been arrested in connection with the incident and has been extradited to Illinois. It is unclear what led authorities to the man or what evidence they may have that supports the charges against him.
While the two Chicago men deserve justice, it is important that prosecutors work to ensure they have not charged an innocent man. All criminal cases, including those involving someone who has been charged with attempted murder or murder, require that prosecutors provide enough evidence to prove that a defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Failure to do so must result in a not guilty verdict.
